    Skift’s annual Megatrends are back. From pet companions to psychedelic retreats, travel is rapidly evolving. But let’s review three of the biggest trends as we enter the new year.

    First, the rise of “quiet luxury.” As high-end properties test just how much their consumers are willing to spend, travelers are growing tired. Columnist Colin Nagy says affluent young travelers want something different: personal, understated experiences.

    Owner-operated hotels fill this niche. “Post-luxury” travelers enjoy a sense of place, and these hotels offer curated — not cookie-cutter — stays.

    Quiet luxury is a departure from conspicuous consumption, but these travelers have spending power. Big brands will have to adapt.

    Next, hotels are playing catch-up with their online travel agency competitors, reshaping their direct booking experience, Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O’Neill explains.

    Hoteliers can seize cloud computing and predictive analytics as they tailor the booking journey. Upsell offers are a key component, with IHG reporting a boost of $20 per night for budget brands as these offers increase.

    AI could also step things up. Maps and 3D models could take guests inside the hotel before they even set foot on the property, giving hotels a chance to monetize every nook and cranny by selling specific features previously bundled into room rates.

    Finally, cool destinations are in hot demand, Editor-in-Chief Sarah Kopit writes.

    Norway and Greenland have garnered more attention on social media, and Arctic Russia, Iceland, and Greenland have witnessed big increases in airline seat capacity since the pandemic. 

    As travelers need a break from the heat, these destinations guarantee relief. But these destinations need to be cautious, focusing on infrastructure and environmental preservation.

    Etihad to Announce ‘Around 10’ New Routes in November: Exclusive

    Etihad Airways is preparing to announce “around 10” new routes, according to Arik De, the airline’s Chief Commercial Officer, in an exclusive interview with Skift. De said the network additions will be revealed in late November.

    Pressed for details on the new destinations, De said that based on current plans, nine routes will be brand new for the airline, with only one city previously served by the company.

    While remaining tight-lipped on where exactly the new links will be, the CCO said growth was possible thanks to new aircraft deliveries. 

    Etihad will receive its first Airbus A321LR (long range) jets next year. These narrowbody planes are designed to fly medium- and long-haul routes that cannot sustain larger aircraft. For example, they can comfortably reach Italy or Thailand from Etihad’s Abu Dhabi hub.

    Industry Speculation

    De told Skift that the airline is aiming for “around mid-Q1” to reveal the interiors of the new jet. Given the long-haul reach of the planes, he acknowledged the intense industry speculation that Etihad will install a widebody-style premium product. 

    As a hub-and-spoke network carrier, this would offer greater consistency for business class passengers on connecting itineraries. The airline’s current fleet of A320s and A321s features an older recliner chair in the business class cabin.

    Big-name brands including JetBlue, TAP Air Portugal, and Aer Lingus have flown the A321LR with lie-flat beds for several years. The bigger unknown is if Etihad will opt for an existing design, or break the mold with a more bespoke option. Given Etihad’s parent company operates an in-house aircraft interiors business, a customized twist on an off-the-shelf product is possible.

    De said the A321LR will be a “very unique aircraft for us,” highlighting that few other carriers in the region operate the plane in a premium configuration. Bahrain’s Gulf Air is a notable exception, however it remains a relatively small player in global terms. 

    Etihad in Growth Mode

    After a well-documented shaky period in the mid-2010s, Etihad bounced back from the pandemic like few other airlines. It is in the middle of an ambitious expansion plan under the leadership of CEO Antonoaldo Neves, who took charge in October 2022. Known internally as ‘Journey 2030’, it aims to significantly increase the airline’s capacity and market reach by the end of the decade. Its fleet is a key part of realizing this vision.

    In contrast to Dubai-based Emirates, Etihad operates a diverse selection of aircraft. Its portfolio spans from the 136-seater A320 to the colossal A380 super jumbo which can carry almost 500 passengers.

    While standardization has efficiency benefits, Emirates’ all-widebody fleet isn’t without its drawbacks. Emirates’ smallest plane is the 777-200LR which seats 302 passengers. This limits its ability to serve smaller niche markets that can’t justify large twin-aisle aircraft. Etihad is hoping that its investment in smaller, more nimble jets will give it a competitive advantage in reaching locations that are impractical for rivals. 

    With Etihad firmly back in growth mode, the CCO hinted that the 10 new routes are unlikely to be the last. De said the airline is currently accepting pitches from airports interested in joining the Etihad network with meetings ongoing.

    A New-Look Etihad?

    De described the mid-Q1 2025 event as “very, very important to look out for,” confirming that its scope will extend beyond the A321LR. “We’ll announce a new brand refresh. We are an ambitious airline, an ambitious country. Our brand needs to be very much more modern and reflect this ambition.”

    De also confirmed that enhancements to the onboard Wi-Fi are in the pipeline, without being drawn on specific partners.

    In-flight connectivity is one of the industry’s hottest topics. Last week United Airlines said it will install Elon Musk’s Starlink Wi-Fi throughout its fleet, becoming the largest carrier to use the satellite-based service. In August, Delta Air Lines announced its onboard internet will soon be free across its global network.

    Product update: Carbon Footprint Reporting Is Now Available!

    We’re closing in on Q4, and we’re excited to announce a significant push in some of our core services, with the most notable being the brand-new CO2 reporting feature. In addition, we’ve introduced new hotel policies, upgraded user management, and made enhancements across all reporting pages.

    1. Carbon Footprint Reports (1st version):

    As sustainable travel and CO2 reduction become increasingly important, we’ve introduced Carbon Footprint Reports to help you measure and manage your company’s environmental impact.

    How it works:
    We partnered with Squake to provide you with accurate CO2 data for all travel. This allows you to choose how to report on travel distance, as well as the CO2 units and calculation methods used.

    Once the Carbon Footprint report is setup, you’ll have access to a CSV file with CO2 calculation per flight leg and hotel stay. You can read more here: Setting up the Carbon Footprint report.

    • The CO2 Report is available exclusively to customers on a paid plan. Reach out to your account manager or our travel team once you’re ready to get started.
    • In the future, we’ll introduce a dashboard on the web app that will allow you to view all CO2 emissions data directly from the app (and, of course, download the CSV file).

    2. Upgraded Accommodation Policies:

    We’ve made significant enhancements to our accommodation policies, allowing you to set more specific restrictions for hotel bookings based on booking duration, accommodation type, nights of the week, and review scores.

    • Booking Duration: Require approval after a maximum number of nights per booking.
    • Accommodation Type: Hide or restrict bookings for homes, apartments, or other non-hotel accommodation types.
    • Nights of the Week: Encourage your team members to avoid booking on certain days by making sure bookings on other days are auto-approved.
    • Review Score: Hide or restrict accommodations with lower review scores.

    3. Improved User and Group Management:

    In case you haven’t noticed yet, we made it a lot easier to manage users and groups with upgraded filters, status indicators and restructured columns.

    4. Labels enhancements

    Previously labels could only be added from the trips page (when looking at your own trip). We added a few valuable improvements to this,

    • You can now add labels when making or requesting a booking (instead of after the booking)
    • Labels can be forced/required for all bookings. Ensuring that all bookings have a label attached to them.
    • When approving a booking (as a manager/super-admin), you can still change or add the label related to this booking.

    5. Other Improvements

    We’ve made some smaller improvements to further optimize your TruTrip experience:

    • Upgraded booking & transactions reports – We’ve made these reports more intuitive by always exposing booking IDs and invoice numbers, and adding search bars to all pages.
    • Manage guest users – “Guests” can now be added by travelers (typically used for adding family members to a trip). Until now, super-admins did not have visibility on guests in the platform. We’ve added the option to view, edit, and even upgrade guest users.
    • Better visibility on credit account status information (payment method page) – We’ve made it clearer to see the credit balance, max amount, invoice frequency, and terms and fees for credit accounts on the payment methods page.

    Malaysia Airlines cutting schedule through December

    Kuala Lumpur-based oneworld carrier Malaysia Airlines is significantly curtailing its operations from now through the end of December 2024 because it has not got enough aircraft to meet its previous schedule obligations. 

     

    The airline is primarily assigning blame to Boeing after the US aircraft manufacturer failed to deliver several 737 Max 8 aircraft to Malaysia Airlines over recent months, leaving it with just four 737 Max aircraft at the moment.

     

    Also, several of the carrier’s A330 aircraft have to undergo maintenance, which is further complicating matters, although the flag carrier is due to take delivery of its first A330neo aircraft in the coming weeks, unless this is also delayed of course.

     

    In the coming months, Malaysia Airlines is reducing flights from Kuala Lumpur to destinations including Osaka and Tokyo, as well as Seoul Incheon. Moreover, there will be significant reductions on routes including KL-Bangkok, as well as Denpasar, Yangon, Medan and Jeddah.

    The flag carrier also has removed previous schedule filings for the resumption of flights to Brisbane.

     

    Last week, however, Malaysia Airlines resumed service to Chiang Mai, and earlier this month it also resumed service to Male in the Maldives, both with 737s.

     

    “As committed before, we are taking immediate steps to address the root causes of these significant issues that contribute to operational difficulties including supply chain constraints, manpower challenges, and other external factors as part of the continuing normalisation of global aviation operations post-pandemic.

     

    MAG has also been affected by the delayed deliveries of new aircraft this year, leading to less aircraft being made available for operations than planned. We are working closely with our aircraft and engine manufacturers, and a wide range of suppliers to comprehensively address supply chain and technical issues,” the airline said on 24 August 2024.

     

    Malaysia Airlines says that affected customers will receive an email notification related to the cancellation of their flight followed by an updated itinerary.

Companies often struggle with achieving ESG factors due to constraints like being unable to afford eco-friendly travel options, difficulty finding reliable travel providers who prioritise sustainability, and, most importantly, the complexity of integrating these factors into policies.

     

    Even when travel providers offer eco-friendly travel options, such as accommodations in hotels with lower carbon transmissions and environmentally friendly ground transportation, the ESG challenges in companies remain.

    Why does sustainability matter?

    You are travelling for business, so how or why does the burden of sustainability in travel weigh down on you?

    No matter why you travel, you are a tourist. Your spending in this role contributes to 10% of the global GDP, which means that you have the power to change toward sustainability simply through your spending.

    Any penny you spend counts towards the economic impact you make on the local community you visit. Thus, if you transition your spending from conventional to local businesses operating on ESG factors, you, as a business traveller, are bringing about sustainability in corporate travel.

    Make Use Of The Local Team

    A practical approach to enhancing sustainability in travelling is to travel domestically rather than internationally. You should look around for local teams, leverage local talent, and try to utilise their business expertise over that of other international companies.

    Even if you cannot find a local alternative and must resort to your international lead, evaluate whether travelling is necessary. Most of the time, your domestic options can suitably meet the needs of your international trips and substantially reduce your travelling’s environmental impact.

    Keep An Eye Out For Greenwashing

    When travelling, you should be alert for greenwashing awareness. Greenwashing is when companies portray themselves as complying with ESG factors and undertaking environmentally friendly practices; however, in reality, they are acting on the contrary.

    Greenwashing awareness is important to ensure that you only purchase from responsible businesses. One way to do so is by checking whether a restaurant, a hotel, or an airline has a sustainability certification. The most popular and reputable certifications are B Corporation, Leaping Bunny, LEED, and FairTrade.

    Research Beforehand

    Preparing for your travel can save you a lot of hassle with choosing accommodations, activities, and travel options. Therefore, do your research. Closely explore the websites of your hotels, tour operators, and activity organisers to see their stance on sustainability and incorporation of ESG factors in their dealings.

    If you don’t find anything about sustainability or their environmental concern, that is your sign to steer clear of them.

    Utilise Public Transportation

    Using public transportation for business travel is an effective method of supporting sustainable travel. As multiple passengers use public transportation, they have a reduced carbon footprint and, as an added benefit, are more economical than private taxis or rental cars.

    Public transportation for business travel is also a great way to support the local economy. It is efficient and faster, especially during peak hours when you are bound to find traffic congestions. However, usability is not always feasible due to health and safety concerns or the lack of availability and accessibility in remote or rural areas.

    Thus, plan ahead and map out your public transportation routine before travelling.

    Book Direct Flights

    Among the many eco-friendly travel options, the one that is the most convenient to implement is booking direct flights. Direct flights have shorter and more straightforward routes that do not include any layovers, which essentially reduces fuel consumption and, in turn, results in lower carbon emissions.

     

    A study conducted in the United States to examine carbon emission in direct flights vs. connecting flights found that, indeed, direct flights are beneficial for carbon emission reduction.

    40% of the total emission reduction in direct flight accounts for the shorter route, and the remaining 60% is due to the elimination of the landing and taking off cycle. Although booking direct flights is a small step, it is a significant one.

    How Travel Brands Are Using Technology to Maximize Value Globally

    To effectively engage travelers globally, travel brands must recognize and address regional preferences in their booking platforms that allow them to be scalable yet flexible enough to adapt.

    What do travelers find valuable when booking destinations, accommodations, and activities? According to a report from Google, high-value travelers consider customer service (60%), an easy-to-use website (55%), online reviews (50%), and loyalty programs (46%) as important factors when choosing a travel brand.

     

    Brands that do not optimize these factors risk missing opportunities to fully engage their customers. Even brands that excel in these areas should keep in mind that travelers’ perceptions of value can vary widely depending on regional preferences, economic conditions, and cultural influences.

     

    “Understanding these nuances is essential for travel brands aiming to meet diverse customer expectations across different markets,” said Sarah Moore, SVP at Rocket Travel by Agoda, the strategic partnerships arm of Agoda, a Booking Holdings company.

     

    Understanding Regional Preferences

    Travelers in various regions find different things valuable when booking travel. For example, the ability to gain redemption opportunities through loyalty points and rewards is a significant factor for travelers in the Americas, where loyalty programs have firmly established themselves as a key component of the travel booking decision.

     

    “The popularity of loyalty programs in the Americas is driven by credit card usage and the margins available in travel,” Moore said. “Loyalty keeps travelers engaged by offering various types of value, including free checked bags.” According to Barclays, the majority of U.S. travelers in loyalty programs (76%) say they can’t imagine taking the caliber of trips they do without the benefits these programs provide.

     

    By contrast, loyalty points have not gained the same traction in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, where the focus is more on discounts.

     

    “In some APAC markets, like Japan, loyalty programs are significant, but in others, they haven’t taken off due to market fragmentation and diverse payment methods,” Moore said. “Many people hold multiple cards for different purposes, limiting the ability to build loyalty. In APAC, instant discount is more common than points, as discounts are a preferred value proposition, reflecting a consumer preference for direct, tangible benefits.” According to a Euromonitor International survey, 60 percent of respondents in Asia Pacific participate in loyalty programs primarily to receive discounts or offers rather than to accumulate points for future rewards.

    Payment methods also vary by region. In China, mobile wallets like Alipay and WeChat Pay are the most popular payment methods, accounting for more than 90 percent of China’s mobile payments. These platforms are integrated into daily life, allowing users to pay for everything from groceries to utility bills via their smartphones. Meanwhile, India has been at the forefront of adopting tokenized payment systems, particularly with the introduction of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). This platform allows instant bank transfers using mobile devices, reducing the need for traditional credit or debit cards.

     

    “When adapting their booking solutions to take regional preferences into account, travel brands should also consider these localized payment methods and user-interface features,” Moore said. “We’ve invested heavily in payments, allowing us to offer more than 100 localized payment options that deliver value in a way that resonates with consumers across different markets. This modularity lets us tailor our solutions, turning features on or off as needed.”

     

    Customer Support Throughout Booking

    For travel brands to capture what travelers around the world find valuable, they need a platform that supports loyalty programs at a global scale and delivers the right experience at the right time in the right way. This starts by providing robust customer support throughout the booking process.

     

    “Specialized customer support is crucial, especially when dealing with complex loyalty programs, payment methods, and currencies,” Moore said. “In APAC, it makes sense to use Whatsapp for customer support, for example. We have support centers with specialized language and currency knowledge for APAC and Latin American markets. We also offer language support for North American Spanish-speaking or Portuguese-speaking customers.”

    According to an Intercom study, 70 percent of customers are more likely to be loyal to businesses that offer customer support in their native language, and 68 percent of customers say they would switch to another brand if it offered customer support in their language. In all, Rocket Travel by Agoda is able to communicate with customers in more than 200 languages, and the company’s currency knowledge allows agents to solve customer problems while taking into account regional differences in applicable laws and tax regulations.

     

    Additionally, it’s worth noting that providing customer support for loyalty bookings requires a different flow and understanding than standard bookings, especially across different languages and currencies. For example, suppose a customer books a hotel using miles and wants to cancel. In that case, Rocket Travel by Agoda’s system ensures they understand how the cancellation affects their points and how quickly they can expect a refund depending on their region.

     

    Comprehensive Planning Tools and Trip Support

    Cross-border trips can quickly become complex due to various factors that require careful coordination and management, especially with international travelers taking longer trips. According to a study by Rocket Travel by Agoda’s sister brand, Booking.com, Japanese travelers spent an average of seven days traveling compared to 18 for Europeans and 14 for Americans in 2022. The UK, Germany, and India are large outbound travel markets, with 67 percent, 75 percent, and 80 percent of travelers in those countries taking international trips, compared to 45 percent of Americans.

     

    By giving travelers the tools they need to plan and manage their entire trip in one centralized location, travel brands can improve customer satisfaction, particularly during major travel disruptions.

     

    “It’s about providing a seamless experience where travelers can access all their itinerary details and receive real-time updates,” Moore said. “This can go a long way toward alleviating stress and confusion during unexpected events such as July’s CrowdStrike-Microsoft IT outage. This approach enhances customer loyalty and positions our platform as a reliable partner in their travel journey.”

     

    Moore cited two recent Rocket Travel by Agoda partnerships that exemplify this approach: The AAdvantage Hotels platform offers one place to earn and redeem rewards for hotel stays, and a collaboration with a large financial institution’s travel rewards program allows customers to book flights, hotels, cars, and attractions on one platform.
